The Quicksand of Fear and Financial Stress… And What to Do So It Doesn’t Pull You Down

January 23, 2023

“When your internal reference point is your spirit, when you are immune to criticism and unfearful of any challenge, you can harness the power of love, and use energy creatively for the experience of affluence and evolution.”

Deepak Chopra, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success

Fear was my #1 issue during a personal growth session in 1991. It took us two hours to reveal what the particular fear was: everything! It took me years to recognize the insidious ways fear had molded my life since childhood.

Like attracts like. When the vibration of fear precedes actions, the results reflect that energy. What follows is lack; struggle; failure; disappointment; frustration; worry; anxiety; loss of business; financial hardship; and that dreadful fear of the future – “what if” things don’t work out and I face a fate worse than death?

Especially when I felt justified, being afraid was like adding sugar to yeast – “Just look at my circumstances. Anyone in them would feel this way.” Fear multiplied which attracted more things to be afraid about.

Once when my budget was screaming “ouch,” I feared missing a credit card payment. I knew someone this happened to, and her rates skyrocketed. My negative musings caused me unconsciously to pay my bill from an account where I don’t keep money… and I missed my payment.

My preoccupation with my imagined, financial ruin also had me overlook paying my water bill. I opened the top portion of a letter sent to alert me and set it aside thinking it was next month’s bill. Only minutes after coming home from burying my cat who died suddenly and discovering my water had been turned off did I see it was a disconnect notice.

I had the money, but I was so consumed with fearing future financial disasters that I created them!  As Job said, “For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.”

You may have been pulled into the quicksand of fear. Once you start sliding down its slippery slope, every frantic breath has you descend into it more deeply.

My successes occurred when I let go of fear.

What is quicksand, and how does it work?

Quicksand is just a soupy mix of water trapped in ordinary sand that can’t escape, a liquefied soil that can’t support weight. It can occur almost anywhere if the right conditions are present. Contrary to being the frightening, bottomless pit portrayed in the movies, it rarely is deeper than a few feet.

Stepping into quicksand will not swallow you whole or suck you under, but thrashing about will force you deeper into it.
The more you struggle, the faster you sink.

Most people who drown in quicksand or in any liquid are those who panic and start flailing their arms and legs. However, it’s easier to break free of it than you may think.

To escape you have to stop fighting. Breathe. The key is not to panic.

The way out is to relax and make slow movements back to the surface.

Because your body is less dense than the quicksand, your body will float to the surface if you let go of the struggle and relax.

In fact, it’s easier to float on quicksand than on water. Once afloat, you can find your way back to safety.

Hmm, so similar to fear – how we drown in it and how we can escape its murky mud.

Fear Causing You Problems? My Dream of Paralyzing Fear May Give You Courage

March 30, 2020

The gorge in my dream was far below, like this one in Blyde River Canyon, South Africa. See how deep the river is? However, in my dream, there were dense walls of trees on either side of the river gorge

The emotions we feel in dreams are real.
Dreams reveal what we harbor beneath our conscious thinking.
They teach us.
Fear can be turned around.
How?
Here’s what I discovered.

It was like a ropes course without ropes.

The entire group of people and instructor were in front of me straddling and scurrying across a log that bridged a deep, deep ravine, without a safety net below.

I looked down and saw I was above a cavernous gorge lined with trees, but soon I’d be above a river that was far below as it cut a path through the wood-filled cliffs.

Before I didn’t think anything about crossing this life-threatening divide. Now there still was no thinking, just the inability to move a muscle.

Suddenly I felt two hands around my waist steadying me, firmly stabilizing me. I didn’t turn around to see who it was. I knew there was no one behind me as I was the last one to cross.

The feeling reminds me of when I was a little girl. I learned to ride my new bike with my father at my side steadying me, acting like training wheels so I couldn’t wobble and fall.

With these invisible hands, I very quickly glided across the log on my way to join the others.

But then I saw that the log ended abruptly before I got to the other side, and the gap was filled with water.

I was traveling so fast that I barely had time to stop, and I thought I would slip over the edge into the abyss.

I began to demand, “How am I supposed to…”  until I noticed that the water there was shallow, around ankle-deep.

Although initially it looked like I hadn’t reached my destination, I realized all I had to do was step onto land.

Then I woke up remembering this vivid dream.

Now while thinking about it, tears come to my eyes.

Things aren’t always (as bad as) what they seem.

I literally can feel how I’m taken care of.

There is a power, call it God or the universe, whatever works for you, that has its invisible hands of safety around us.

It keeps us steady as we bravely, or even if we feel completely incapacitated, go forward.

Whatever your destination in life, including being healthy or keeping afloat financially, you can get there or someplace better.

Even if it looks like you don’t know how you can do it or feel you can’t make it, there is a way.

Ask and be open to receive instead of blocking your good through doubt.

You can move forward successfully with bold decisions, even though you don’t think you have a safety net and the stakes are high.

You are watched over and taken care of!

It can be better (and easier) than you may imagine.

TRUST things are working out for you.

If you don’t BELIEVE you can, to start, make believe you can.

TRUST and BELIEF transform outcomes.

Hold the vision of your ideal outcome AS IF it is already done.

Think from the END result not about it.

You are more in CONTROL of your life and health than you might believe possible.

What you think about and FEEL are what you attract.

ANTICIPATE the best outcome!

Don’t misuse but use your IMAGINATION in ways that support YOU.

THINK healthy, positive thoughts.

You are NOT ALONE.

You have a TEAM on the other side.

Claim this, and it’s YOURS.

SO BE IT!  SO BE IT!  SO BE IT!

Are You Running Away From Your Fear?

January 17, 2017

girl-and-stuffed-animal

Your success accelerates and happiness blooms when you let go of fear and the ego’s grasp.

Fear subtly whispers what if the worse happens. It can have you look calm or cheerful, but inside quiet trepidation runs like a persistent, low grade fever. It can breed a full-blown panic humbling you to beg a divine power for help – hoping/doubting if anyone is listening to your prayers or wondering if they’ll bother to answer them.

Fear can masquerade as anger, frustration, pain, avoidance, blaming, complaining, feeling like a victim, sadness, apathy, bullying, guilt, rescuing, suffering as well as every facet of unhappiness.

Fear creates lack of clarity and direction while triggering procrastination or immobilizing you from taking action, dreading that you’ll make a mistake and then you-know-what will hit the fan.

Although miserable to experience, these outcomes provide a compelling distraction from looking at the culprit – your underlying fear.

However, just like in the Wizard of Oz when the curtain was pulled back, there’s nothing substantive to fear.

  1. Fear is only a scary story in your head.
  2. You can more effectively deal with real issues when you’re not emotionally clouded.
  3. You continue to attract unwanted circumstances until you stop running away from your fear, let it go and see it for what it is: a no-thing.
  4. You only attract what you can handle, so there’s no reason to fear anything.

When you stop thinking and talking about your problems as if you’re in a Stephen King novel, you stop generating your real-life, horror stories.

FEAR = False Evidence Appearing Real.

The ego will lead you to believe that you’ll have more pain if you look at your fear.

However, it’s the embellished, painful narratives of what horrible fate might happen in the future or remembering what happened in the past that snags you.

When you focus on the past and future, you bypass present time, and this is where your personal empowerment dwells.

How can you know if you’re doing this? Listen to your own stories. What’s the timeline – past, present or future?

Ego will play you like a fiddle – directing your attention to what you don’t have (like enough money, time, love, health, direction or success), past and future worries, anywhere but the Now.

If you allow yourself to look at your inner bogeyman, with an intention of letting it go, you’ll find freedom.

Ask for your inner spirit to shine your courage so you can let go of fear and find the tools and support to release what’s holding you back.

You can begin now:

  • Be willing to let go.
  • Ask for help – inwardly and outwardly.
  • Journal to bring clarity and with the intention of letting go.
  • Open to receive a life and business that exceeds your wildest expectations.

When you feel afraid you give your power away. Choose to take it back.

If you don’t get this job or deal, you can get another.

If one way doesn’t work, it’s not the end of the world. Another can be even better. (By the way, I used to be a master at making mountains out of molehills, so I know how much anxiety, pain and self-destruction this habit generates.)

No person, circumstance, financial condition, politician, economic outlook, industry predictions, threats, doctor’s diagnosis, the past or unknown future can affect you unless you let it.

Dwelling on fear or what doesn’t work is emotional quicksand that sabotages your success.

A woman told me about a dream she had with a ferocious lion. Instead of running away, she walked toward it and through it. It had no substance.

You pay a high price for letting fear run your life. Drama. Stress. Challenging relationships. Attracting more fear than money. Confusion. Unconsciously repelling business. Poor health. A life that doesn’t feel like it’s worth living.

You can change now.

Make a decision that instead of listening to the nagging, fear-based story in your head, and judging yourself for having it, you’ll focus on what you choose and what’s working.

Results? You’re happier. Your business and finances grow. You attract love from all the right places. Your health improves.

You’re worth it.
