Forget Age. I Just Saw Petula Clark Perform at 86 Years Old!

November 26, 2018

Petula.

Performing since the age of nine, and with England giving her the beloved name of their Pet, Petula Clark has had a wide and varied career — from singing for the troops during WW2 to an international pop icon, the movies, TV, radio, stage, clubs and touring. It doesn’t seem to be ending soon, either.

I saw Petula sing the day after Thanksgiving at the One World Theatre in Austin. She didn’t need pyrotechnics or props to make her show a WOW.

She was herself, with her music and us, playing to a full house. The audience adored her, and she loved us back. She was more than enough. In fact, she and her performance were stunning in a depth beyond words.

Somewhere in the back of our thoughts was the realization that we were privileged to see her shine at 86 years old. Her voice is strong. She adapted songs to fit her current vocal range. She moved a bit stiffly at times, but she still could do a wee jig as she did in the movie Finian’s Rainbow with another icon, Fred Astaire, while singing one of its tunes.

Following a story about Peggy Lee and herself, she sensuously sang Ms. Lee’s cover song “Fever.”

While she sang some of her classics, she made it a point to intersperse her repertoire with the present, starting the show with a song on happiness and later singing one she co-wrote about living in the now. She doesn’t want to be defined by the sixties and her most famous song “Downtown.”

She shared memories of needing advice when she visited John Lennon and Yoko Ono in Montreal during their Bed-In for Peace. There was no security, and she walked in. There they were sitting in bed. John said, “Hi Petula.”

She wouldn’t repeat his words, but I later read she was troubled about protests in Canada where she was giving bi-lingual concerts.

“I explained what was going on and asked him what I was supposed to do. John replied: ‘F*** ’em.'” He said it didn’t matter, and to let them get over it.

Petula is known as a great interpreter of songs. When she followed this story by singing “Imagine,” she brought us beyond just imagining to being in this imagined world.

When she sang the Beatles’ “Blackbird” and gently, meaningfully gestured with her arms as if they were wings, we were healed and rose up with her:

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

Eva Peron talked to us from her heart when we listened to her sing “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” from Evita.

Petula Clark brought with her a lifetime of experience, caring, humanity, intelligence, emotion and sensitivity that a young pop icon wouldn’t know, couldn’t access. Now she can and does blend all of this with her talent and entertainment skill and gives birth to this combined force in a way she never could have done before.

Yes, we were there to be entertained. In addition, we saw a role model who spoke through example. Go beyond tribal thinking of limitation regarding age. There may need to be adaptations, like Ms. Clark did with her vocal range. But her voice is still very strong. What she may have lacked in body movement, she gained with her spirit and emotion that came from the depth of her being.

She is a living example to never give up. She knows life changes, so change with it. Petula Clark demonstrates that age can bring benefits that youth wouldn’t know, and one’s gifts can be shared even more richly.

I help them be richly compensated
doing what they love by discovering
their Soul’s goals.

TIP: My Staycation in Mexico

July 19, 2016

IMG_3623
Don’t have time or money to travel? I enjoyed a trip to Mexico minutes from my home and discovered traditions and a rich culture that I never knew existed – especially meaningful in our divisive times.

Guelaguetza is a like a big party of cultural exchange. Indigenous folkloric dances and performances honor the diversity of traditions from eight distinct regions of the Mexican state of Oaxaca.

After two years of planning, this festival was proudly shared for the first time in Austin, Texas.

The audience spontaneously sang beloved songs and stood while they sang the national anthems of the United States and Mexico.

Between a couple of the performances, colorfully costumed women served mezcal, a cousin to tequila, in orange peppers that were the size of jalapeno peppers.

Another first for me, just one sip went down very warm and smooth.

When we finished the drink, we ate the pepper.

Well over 50% of Oaxaca’s population is native indigenous, compared to 20% of Mexico as a whole.

Another way of seeing this, more than half of the people come from distinctly different cultures.

As it was described to me, “these tribes gather annually to celebrate good wishes, goodwill, friendship and love between each other.”

IMG_3643

This photo was taken as the women completed their dance. Each wore a different costume representing her region. Their headdresses represent food they brought to share. Apologies for the fuzzy picture. I thought it better for you to see it rather than not include it because it wasn’t perfect.

“This event celebrates cooperation with each other instead of war.

“Our planet is filled with people who are different. Guelaguetza acknowledges and revels in our differences.”

What a gift we’re given in our modern times to witness people who honor their differences through celebration!

Let that sink in a moment.

If other humans on our planet can co-exist, respect and honor differences, so can we.

We don’t have to be afraid of people who aren’t like us.

What if we had conversations that opened us to each other’s uniqueness?

Think what this can mean in your business and life.

Instead of feeling anxious because you don’t know somebody and don’t know what to expect because they might be different than you, enjoy the contrast.

What are your chances of creating a better business or personal relationship if you approach people in the spirit of appreciating their uniqueness?

Here’s an example of this giving spirit before the event began.

My friends and I arrived early, and I ordered a Oaxacan specialty dish from a food trailer.

Although there was no line when I ordered, it took 15 minutes to receive my food.

When my friend inquired about the delay, she reacted uncharacteristically with a disapproving tone.

I received my food and found a place in the shade to eat it.

But where were my friends?

I watched an ever growing line of people waiting for food.

When my friend saw that the guy was working by himself because he wasn’t expecting a crowd, she felt she needed to help him.

He didn’t look at the long line of people standing in the direct sun of over 100 degree heat; he wanted to cook.

But he couldn’t do it all by himself.

IMG_3620

It was taking 15 minutes per person to receive food as people waited in the hot sun.

She didn’t ask if he wanted help as she went into the little trailer.

She told the overwhelmed, young man that she’d take orders, and he could focus on cooking.

For the next two hours, she worked in the “sauna” taking orders and managing the kitchen as family members came to help.

Her older brother stood by the side door. Instead of going to watch the performances, he cheerily said he was standing there to be entertained.

Actually, he was watching out for his sister and smoothing the emotions of the customers who questioned the wait time.

Later, when I asked why she did it, she replied.

“I had a feeling that someone had to help him. When you’re some place, there’s a reason. I felt in the moment, I need to help him. And, I enjoyed the experience of taking orders.”

She refused any payment and accepted some soda and water for us.

We had lots of laughs about it later, and no one even hinted at a word or sentiment of complaint.

Your TIP is to take inspired action by doing something you feel guided to do. Be open to allow your inner spirit to lead you… not because of duty or what you think you should do.

Let’s take it another step.

When you take action have a feeling of goodwill and appreciation in your heart.

Imagine how powerful, productive, compassionate and loving your business and personal interactions can be.

Do this often enough and you’ll feel so great that your life can be as if you’re on a perpetual vacation.

TIP: Are You in the Flow?

April 12, 2016

In Divine flow. Tapping into the mastermind energy. Aligning with your Soulgoals. Being in the vortex.

What do they mean, how do you know if you’re in it and what difference does it make if you are or you’re not?

To explain what I mean by divine flow, and all of these names lead you to a similar experience, here’s an excerpt from my program Resolved for Results: A Step-by-Step Guide to Do What You Love… even if you failed before, lost hope, are afraid, stressed or confused.

When you choose to be in divine flow, you allow the universal energy and your spirit to take you beyond the daily chaos and ego’s desires.

Divine flow elevates you to a zone beyond fear and resistance, to be at peace with what is. You relax and release fixed ideas of how you think your life should go by knowing there’s a bigger plan in play.

What difference does it make? You choose.

How do you know if you’re OUT of it. (Pun kind of intended.)

When you’re out of or against the flow, it’s like swimming upstream.

Life is hard, frustrating and a struggle. You’re worried, things aren’t working. You’re full of fear, anxiety, lack, limitation, doubting yourself, and business isn’t running smoothly.

I know you’ve experienced these at times. Maybe now.

Imagine changing the channel on your radio.

You have to be on the correct frequency to hear an AM station. If you’re tuned to FM, you won’t receive AM.

When you’re not in the flow, you’re tuned to a channel to receive a bunch of stuff that doesn’t make you feel good.

Then, it’s easy to blame others for problems, health, accidents, finances, break downs, and burdens.

Yeah, all that complaining about things builds energy to generate even bigger problems that make you want to complain more.

Yeah, it seems like it shouldn’t be that way. That we can spew our anger and frustration and somehow life will change because we’re having a hissy fit.

That’s not the way the Universe is set up.

Instead, life matches the way you feel and ups the ante.

There’s a far easier way, if you’re willing to let go of the habit of grumbling and feeling bad about what you don’t like.

If life isn’t working, change your channel.

Feeling grateful is a good place to start.

How you know if you’re IN it.

The momentum you create is like a powerful waterfall.

I took notes during a recent mastermind meeting when a new, team member described her life now:

I’m zipping through life with energy, happiness and vitality. Never in my life have I been happier. Everything gets done. Everything is wonderful. Everyone is great.

Usually my life is like a roller coaster – up and down. Frustrated. Not going right.

Before, business kept me so occupied, I didn’t have time for my creative side – painting and singing.

Now, I paint every day, and the ideas are immense. I see colors and patterns. It’s just incredible. I’m singing in a church choir again. Before, I thought it would take time away from my family. It doesn’t.

Business is going great, and I’m not worried about it. I’m so excited. I don’t have the vocabulary to explain what I’m doing.

She said instead of worry, she visualizes what she chooses for her life throughout the day.

Instead of stress, she sees her business working.

When you focus on what you choose long enough with good feeling mojo, similar to what Olympic athletes do, you’ve tuned into that channel.

Eventually, there’s no gap between where you are and where you choose to be.

You’re in the right place at the right time, saying and doing the right things.

Solutions appear.

You are a living example of being in divine flow.

Your TIP is to give yourself a time-out today from complaining. About anything. Traffic. People. Politics. Finances. Weight. How parts of your life suck.

Let it go.

Simultaneously, choose to be in divine flow.

Maybe you can only manage to do this for two minutes.

Tomorrow, maybe two and a half.

Or backslide and start again immediately.

Being with supportive people who consciously create a vortex of mastermind energy makes it easier than trying to do this all by yourself.

By the way, before posting today’s TIP…  I just got off the phone with an amazing mastermind team – successful people expanding to BIGGER success.

Everyone commented on the joy and excitement to be part of a collective energy with conscious people while tapping into the mastermind energy.

“Our combined energy is changing everything for us and the world.”

Miracles and successes created since they focused attention on masterminding were astounding.

Opportunities out of the blue. New clients. Transformation. Inspiring. Blessing. Spiritual journey. Not alone. Support. Encouragement. These are a few of the words they shared to describe this morning’s meeting.

Would you benefit from being in the flow?

GET WHAT YOU WANT WITH UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

February 14, 2014

Image

Dear Valentine,

May you recognize the moment to take action on what you love.

What would happen if you unconditionally loved and didn’t disapprove of you or others? Imagine if this went viral.

Imagine a world where thinking and telling others and yourself about how they have to change, what they did wrong as well as criticizing, complaining and controlling don’t exist. The ego, in its need to be justifiably right, would suffer so much that its shell would crack and reveal… Love.

I used to mix up being non-judgmental and loving with not seeing what is. People have their potential and their behavior. I saw others’ essence and avoided how they showed up.

My cat doesn’t have this problem. Once and only once, she brought in a small, dead rat – and put it under where my boyfriend was. She didn’t have an emotional charge about it. Just communicated her message with a package.

He said he could break her of that habit. However, I got the memo and loved myself enough to see him for who he was. More than one rat got tossed out that week.

Let’s put these together. See people and situations for what they are (good, bad or ugly), Love AND not disapprove. Huh?

Consider this. Your brain is a computer that holds patterns, neural pathways, of the way you think and feel. Computers only delete programs when you click YES.  You must click YES to delete what you want to get rid of on your computer.

If you emotionally chew on negative thoughts and emotions, the reverse of what you really want happens. It’s like clicking the SAVE button. What resists, persists.

So, how can you get what you really want? I know this may sound counter-intuitive. Choose to let go of disapproving yourself and whatever you don’t want in your life. All life is energy. So, say YES to the disapproval energy. Say YES to delete the program.

Next, unconditionally love what’s not working AND unconditionally give it permission to leave. Unconditional love is a magician, the ultimate healer.

Choose to let go of disapproval energy about what you don’t want and say YES to approving yourself and situations. Say YES to unconditionally loving what you want to let go of and YES to give it permission to leave. All you need is love!

Now, imagine being at an event where you are nurtured with unconditional love and support for both you and what you really want, even if you’re not sure what that is. Because egos and disapproval are left at the door, there’s an atmosphere of acceptance, fun and feeling safe. This environment generates energy for you to get what you want faster.

I invite you to experience this at our FREE Mastermind Roundtable & Networking event on Sunday, February 16, 2-5 PM, at Joe’s Crab Shack on 600 E Riverside Dr, Austin, TX  78704. You and your friends are welcome to experience a unique networking event and form of masterminding to unlock your heart’s desires so you can experience miracles beyond your wildest expectations and LIVE what you know to be true.

Register now to reserve your space for free and enjoy the infusion of life-changing energy. http://owl.li/t5oql

This is a new format which blends a unique twist on networking, getting clear on what you really want, as well as Resolved for Results masterminding with three different people as you expand your energy and vision of possibilities and are motivated to take action.

By the way, this is a non-brainstorming masterminding technique. Our masterminding sets energy in motion by asking for what you want in a harmonious, intentional environment. And it creates results.
